DriverStore Explorer is a free open source program for Microsoft Windows devices to view the content of the Windows Driver Store and to manipulate it.

Microsoft introduced the DriverStore in Windows Vista and used it in all newer versions of Windows since. It is a collection of first and third-party driver packages that Windows trusts and stores on the local hard drive.

    The entire driver...

When you search on Amazon, Newegg or any other shopping site for ethernet cables, you will soon encounter terms you may not be familiar with.

The shops carry Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat7 ethernet cables, but how do these differ from each other?

More precisely, which cable should you pick for your home network and are there other things that you need to take into consideration?

    Cat,...

A video on YouTube, Twitch or Facebook stutters? You experience frame drops in your favorite game or video chat, or notice other performance issues on your system?

While old or less capable hardware may be the reason for that, performance issues may sometimes be caused by less than optimal settings.

If you run a Windows PC with Nvidia hardware, you have some options to tweak the system...

The Settings application is one of the central locations in Windows 10 to manage and customize the operating system.

It is still largely a work in progress, as Microsoft announced back in 2015 that it wanted to migrate all Control Panel applets to the Settings application eventually.

Windows 10 users still juggle between the Control Panel and Settings app more than two years after the...

Microsoft added a bunch of smaller features and improvements to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

One of the new features displays the GPU performance in the Task Manager provided that a compatible driver is installed.

You can launch the Windows Task Manager with the shortcut Ctrl-Shift-Esc. If this is the first time opening the Task Manager, you need to switch from the -- completely...

The Windows operating system comes with plenty of built-in tools to analyze resource usage. The most prominent one is probably the Windows Task Manager, as it highlights resource usage of individual processes, and gives admins and users options to kill any misbehaving ones.

The Performance Monitor and Resource Monitor are two additional tools that admins and experienced Windows users...

Win32 programs have a lot of flexibility when it comes to the installation process. Programs may install in various directories, may write to the Registry, or run on system start without asking the user about it.

Most programs install in one of the "official" program folders. There is c:\Program Files\ for 64-bit applications, and c:\Program Files (x86)\ for 32-bit programs.

    It often...

Microsoft Office uses the language of the system to display interface elements usually. That's usually what users of the program want, but some users may want it to use a different language instead.

I for instance prefer to run the English version of Microsoft Office. The reason is simple: whenever I write an article about Office, I need to use the English terms for menus and...

For about a week now, I experienced an issue when double-clicking on Excel spreadsheets to load them in Microsoft Excel 2016. Excel would open as expected, but instead of loading the selected spreadsheet, the application opened a blank document instead.

More precisely, it did not open a spreadsheet at all, not even a blank one, but displayed no document in its interface.

    I tried...
